The Fool: A powerful figure of transmutation
Heyoka, Jester, Clown, Satirist, Madman, Beggar. All titles that have been applied to the energy of The Sacred Fool–an important role throughout indigenous cultures. This role, however, is not exclusive to indigenous beliefs also showing up in non indigenous media for thousands of years. These Fools are magicians, shamans, priests, and storytellers used to help pass along important life lessons to the other members in their culture.
The fool is a wayman, a ferryman, a crossroads guide placed in charge of above and below, the beginning and the end, life and death. An important role is a pathway through transmutation. They often behave in opposition to those around them. This behavior raising important spiritual and cultural questions that help guide the community to deeper understanding of themselves.
This satirical behavior also is associated with the spiritual carnival, an egregoric spiritual location that through topsy-turvy social paradigms corrects right and wrong. The Carnival is most often seen use as a rhetorical device in Carnivalesque literature. At the Carnival The Fool reigns supreme as a leader amongst the other attendees. There The Fool crowns the poor, and decrowns the rich. Fattens the Famished, and Thins the Gluttonous.
The Fool
In the tarot, The Fool originally named Le Mat (or the beggar/the madman) is a card that is represented by the number 0 and the number 22. The First and The Last. Though, in most early iterations of the card itself was unnumbered. The cards unnumbered nature signifying its place amongst the suits of trumps. The Fool had none. In some tarot games, The Fool is also known as The Excuse.
The Fool is considered in traditional divination to be the main character, and the Major Arcana to be his path through the mysteries of life. Ultimately leading him back to himself.
